Had a recent cancellation with Jetstar which caused a missed connection. Paid the out of pocket for a new flight and was refunded the ticket price from Jetstar. While inconvenient, travel insurance picked up the out of pocket expenses. Do most people here not bother with travel insurance?? It seems most of the issues relating to being left out of pocket by flight cancellations, lost baggage, delayed flights etc could be avoided with this cheap alternative.

Personally, yes I purchased
Personally, yes I purchased travel insurance. Sometimes the insurer may not be willing to pay for it- it really depends on cancellation reason and individual insurers. My insurer told me that Jetstar should be liable for the out-of-pocket expenses as they cancelled due to "crewing requirements." Again, other issues may be that Jetstar doesn't even bother to provide us with a simple letter that will allow us to make the insurance claims. Not all insurers cover everything, and some may even deny liability due to the stupid conditions of carriage Jetstar has put up. (mine was MSIG in case you're wondering.)
April, are you advocating
April, are you advocating that people should have to buy insurance just because Jetstar is too inept or incapable to run a airline. Reading all the complaints on this web site and Jetstar's own facebook it looks like half of all Jetstar flights are either cancelled, delayed or rescheduled. They seem like they don't care if you are inconvenienced. Lianne is also right. Not every stuffed up flight can be claimed through your insurance. You were very lucky that yours did.
Buying insurance is not going to get this pathetic company to get its act together and stop messing around with peoples travel plans. Avoid jetstar and fly other airlines and you would not need insurance since most of them run a relatively reliable service.
