Flight JQ635 6.20 pm BRisbane
Sitting on 12 C exit row
I was approached by a cabin crew member who inform me that I would have to store my hand luggage in the overhead locker. Her tone was not very pleasant but I complied.
Then she further informed me I would also have to store away a small wallet attached to a lanyard on my neck.
When I told her that a Qantas crew allowed me to keep my wallet a few days earlier,it is then that the true nature of this pompous crew member showed when she told me in no uncertain terms that this was the airline rule and if I did not like it she would move me away.
Now,I do not mind obeying to the airline cabin rules if these were explained to me in a decent and professional manner, but I strongly object to be treated so unrespectfully and so arrogantly by one of you employees who, frankly should not be employed on a job that requires tact, manners and understanding

Couldn't she just let you put it in the seat pocket if it was so 'vital' you take it off?? Just another valid reason I won't be flying Jetstar again. Attitude is everything, there are ways to speak to people and she obviously didn't know the correct one !!!!

As all the other airline

As all the other airline staff will tell you, Jetstar staff make it up as they go along.

Being the fact you were in an exit row it is vital that in an emergency that nothing blocks people from exiting! This means that bags are not permitted under the seat in front of you as they can slip back on an over run of the runway etc. and block the path of escape! As for the wallet, if a cabin crew member deems that it is a risk to the safety of other passengers, the cabin crew is entitled to ask you to do what they want to ensure the safety of other passengers. In this case you wallet around your neck being removed. This would be due to the fact that you were in one of the emergency exit rows and that anyone in the row, should they be required to, must be able to open the emergency exit door and if this could interfere with you doing that then it is a hazard.

As for the F/A's attitude, well, if it is what you say it is then it is unacceptable.

Lachy, having worked in the aviation business for 33 years now on all levels, I can say with complete confidence that your comment is absolute, crap. But I will say this: if a cabin crew member deems that a wallet on a lanyard around the passenger neck is a risk to the safety of other passengers, then that crew member needs to be taken off the roster for psychiatric evaluation. The crew members actions were nothing more than an ill-tempered action designed to demonstrate the extent of their authority. Something like a tom cat spraying in the living room corner. Perhaps you might ask your friends at Jetstar to improve their personnel training before letting them loose on the general public.
