Beware, their policy is TOTALLY SCREWED UP AND INCONSISTENT. I have flown Jetstar 30 or so times internationally around South East Asia, and I've ended up having to purchase an entirely NEW ticket 3 times... before I said screw it, I'll never fly them again, regardless of how much I have to pay to circumnavigate them.
The worst part about it is.... all 3 times I've been corned and denied being able to board, and having to purchase a new ticket, their is a distinct look of glee that overcomes them. You can see them suppressing a smile and delight in having screwed you badly.
I was asked to crew on a yacht from Phuket down to Singapore. I didn't know how long the trip would take, or how long I would stay in Singapore to help transfer the yacht to a new owner. So purchased a one way ticket with Jetstar from Sydney to Phuket. Then once in Singapore, I my plan was to simply fly 1 way back either via Air Asia or Virgin or Jetstar.
Well, seems Jetstar doesn't like the competition. They wouldn't let me board my flight from Sydney to Phuket... why? Because I didn't have a return ticket. I explained I would be on a yacht down to Malaysia then Singapore, and that my passport gives me a 30 day visa on arrival for all 3 countries, they didn't care.
Forced me to purchase a ticket DEPARTING phuket to Singapore, which was the cheapest at the time, right there on the spot, or they wouldn't let me board. So I was forced to do it, even though I would have no need for the ticket.
Here is a list of discount carriers that fly the same routes as Jetstar, I recommend to everyone traveling around South East Asia to not support Jetstar and instead, put their money into a carrier that actually cares about customer satisfaction and doing the right thing.

Thought this guy would have learnt the first time he got screwed.
Look at going Virgin or Air Asia.
It's a requirement of all
It's a requirement of all airlines to request to see your return ticket when leaving Australia. Many countries will NOT accept passengers through customs without evidence of a return ticket. If a passenger is refused entry into a country because of no evidence of a valid return date - the airlines are fined.
Not a Jetstar problem. Does not matter which airline your flying - they all have the same policy in relation to valid return tickets.
